A later trip to the state during the Civil War landed her in court for breaking a law that forbade African Americans from coming to Indiana, though she was never convicted. Our primary goals are to ensure the safety of victims of family violence and provide a pathway out of violence for victims and abusers through opportunities to make positive and lasting changes for themselves and their children.

Safe Haven offers up to 60 days of shelter for animals of domestic violence victims. Many victims are hesitant to leave a dangerous situation because they fear for their animal’s safety. This program makes it possible for victims to leave without losing their companion animal. Recognizing the link between animal abuse and family violence, we partner with the Wisconsin Humane Society to offer the Safe Haven Foster Program. Safe Haven provides temporary shelter for pets of domestic violence victims, making it possible for victims to leave a dangerous situation knowing their animal is safe.

Her mother, Mau-Mau Bett, was scheduled to be sold at the auction block, but the heirs of her enslaver realized that once she was gone, there would be no one to take care of her ailing husband, James Baumfree.
