The parents (voiced by Matthew Goode and Claudie Blakley) quickly become enslaved by its dark spirit (or that of its owner, whose shadowy face is occasionally superimposed over the whole – you know the drill). Their young daughter, Mabel (Mia Goth), remains unaffected, but the malevolent house transforms around her so she cannot reach her entranced parents in time to save them from the raging conflagration that finally consumes them. With the three-episode structure for the series, there are many roles voiced by notable actors. Chapter 1 alone has exciting prospects with Matthew Goode and Mia Goth as part of the Raymond family that first encounters the house. Also included in the cast is Miranda Richardson as Aunt Clarice (via Deadline).
Every so often while watching The House, a new stop-motion film on Netflix, I would remember that every single frame had been meticulously set up and photographed, and my mind would be blown all over again. Set in the present day, a harassed property developer tries to make a quick sale from a renovation. However, some eerie unexpected guests have other plans and become the catalyst to a more personal transformation.

We don’t quite know why Rosa wants to desperately hold onto the mansion despite the entire city being underwater, but at least there’s an arc there where she finally learns to let that go, and she’s rewarded for it. “The idea was that the viewer would recognize the house every time, with the sensation that they’ve been there before, which was really important to us,” said Bavasso. As part of the effort to maintain this harmony, Nexus hired Enda Walsh (“Hunger”) to polish the directors’ rough outlines into a screenplay. She has tenants, played by Helena Bonham Carter and Will Sharpe, but they pay her in fish and crystals - unacceptable currencies to the plumbers and electricians she would like to employ.
The final scenes reveal the Developer with his spirit well and truly broken. But the story is too underbaked to deliver any real horrors or work as a fable about violation, or capitalism or any of the other themes it seems at various moments to be nodding vaguely at. Each episode is directed by a different director and a different host of characters. While the characters change, each story revolves around the titular house at different times in chronological order. This story revolves around a family that moves into the house in the 19th century.
Despite the various circumstances and timelines, in each story the house represents a kind of lifeline for the characters. It’s a chance for a family to inspire jealousy, for a mouse to pull himself out of the crushing weight of debt, and for a cat to slowly build the home of her dreams. What’s most interesting about The House is how each story offers a different riff on this theme. The first two chapters lean into being creepy, particularly their unsettling endings, but while the first is more of a slow-building dread, the second is much more tangible. Meanwhile, the final chapter, despite starting out quite bleak, ends on a surprisingly hopeful note. The second story, directed by Swedish animator and filmmaker Niki Lindroth von Bahr, takes things from “gothic children’s fairy tale” creepy to straight-up horror movie creepy.

The House is a freakish, darkly comedic arthouse-style miniseries that’ll stay with you for some time after the credits roll. Its loosely linked narratives will draw you in with their emotionally resonant story beats and modern stop motion aesthetic, before its wicked about-turns will leave you disturbed, unnerved and even bizarrely hopeful. That isn’t to say that Nexus Studios’ use of stop motion is outdated – far from it.

Mabel becomes further put off when her parents don attire designed by Van Schoonbeek which resembles the furniture they adore (a chair and curtains). So before you make your decision, we want to make sure you know what this dark comedy is about. The House’s cast and musical elements are hat-tips to decades gone by, too. Acting icons of the 1980s and 1990s, including Miranda Richardson (The Crying Game, Blackadder) and Stephanie Cole (Tenko, Doc Martin) are among the show’s stellar cast. The addition of Helena Bonham Carter (Sweeney Todd, Harry Potter), is also fitting, given that The House is occasionally reminiscent of the works of Tim Burton, Bonham Carter’s ex-partner and collaborator.
